The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire
Farmers Mart held their annual sale of Cheviot Mule ewe lambs and
gimmer shearlings at Longtown on Tuesday August 22nd 2006.
A record
entry of 3000 saw strong demand for the better sorts, particularly
those out of the North Country Cheviot ewe.
Those selling lambs
out of the South Country ewe found buyers much more selective,
with many lots looking excellent value. Shearling gimmers met a
good demand and more could have been sold.
Top price for ewe lambs
was £88 from A & A B Graham,
Barnglies, selling to S Whiteford, St Johns Kirk followed at £82
from H Cockburn & Co., Kingside to D Hodgson & Son, Swinhoe
North Farm. There were pens at £80 from Corrie Hills, Embley & West
Nubbock.
Ewe lambs out of the South Country ewe topped at £74
from J Common & Sons, Crossdykes, £72 J Laurie & Co.,
Carterton, Gimmer shearlings £88 Messrs A Smith, Gallhills,
others £85 Castlehill, £84 Gallhills, £71 Cowburn.
Overall
the ewe lamb average was £54.73 down £7 on
the year. Gimmers averaged £73.31. All lots were sold.
