Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their Annual
Border Cheviot Ewe Sale together with Draft Swaledale and Blackface
Ewes at their Longtown Mart on Wednesday 1st October 2003,
when they had forward a catalogue entry of 7,237.
Both North and
South Country Cheviot Ewes were the usual high quality
entry and attracted a large company of buyers including a strong
consignment from Devon and Wales. Trade was excellent throughout
with all vendors very happy.
Top of £75 and £72 for
North Cheviot Shearlings from Carslae and £65 Shaw Hill;
1 crop ewes to £60.50 Carslae; 2 crop £62 Jerriestown
(Hewson); correct ewes £55, £53 Marwhirn; ewe lambs £52
Shawhill.
Hill Cheviots sold to £54 for a superior pen from
Castle Crawford, others to £46 Glenochar Burn and £42
Chapel and Glendinning Hope, shearlings to £53 South End, £50
Steilston; ewe lambs £38 Castle Crawford, £36 Upper
Hindhope.
Included in the sale was the Elsdonburn dispersal from
Mr E. Fox which sold to a top of £62 for shearlings, 2/3
crop to £52, 4 crop to £49, 5 crop to £57.50,
with an overall average of £51.08.
Horned ewes were a larger
entry on the year and again plenty of both local and distant
buyers were to the fore. Trade for all
classes of ewes was very strong as was best shearlings and ewe
lambs, secondary sorts proved harder to sell.

and £69 for pens of Blackface shearlings from Gillalees,
correct Blackface ewes to £50 Lyndarick, £40 Penpeugh, £38
Windy Hill, £37 Miltonise; correct belows £27.50 Miltonise
and £27 Sundhope; ewe lambs £38 Sundhope, £36
Dunblane.
Swaledales sold to £66, £58, £57 for
pens of shearlings from Low Lonning with others to £58 Kilnstown
and £57 West Craigs. Correct Swaledale ewes £39 Dumblar
Rigg; correct belows £26 Stonehall, Slaggyford; ewe lambs £30
Border Rigg.
Included in the sale was a stock dispersal on behalf
of Messrs I.W. & D. Rutter, Townfoot, Eals whose top was £60
for shearlings, 1 crops sold to £59 with 2 crops to £62,
overall average of £57.88.
North Country Cheviot Rams
At their Annual Show of North Country
Cheviot Rams, a catalogue entry of 130 was forward. A record entry
saw prices for the lesser sorts rather down on the year, however
there was a good demand for the best rams from north
of England buyers. Prior to the sale judging was ably carried out
by Mrs Jane Jackson, Ericstanes, Moffat whose awards were as follows:-
1st and Champion from R. & T. Dun, Gilston.
2nd prize G. Burroughs, Threepwood Cottage.
3rd prize R. & T. Dun, Gilston.
Topping the sale was Mr G. Burroughs,
Threepwood Cottage with two shearlings
selling at £500 each, one to Messrs Hoggarth, Old Hall Farm, Ulpha, Broughton
in Furness and the other to Messrs Blanc of Long Garth, Ulpha. Others sold to £350
from Messrs Strawhorn, Broomhillbank, £340 and £300 Allanshaws, £300
(twice) Gilston and £300 Ericstane.
An entry of 22 Blackface & Swaledale
Rams saw the very best in great demand
to a top of £300 for a Blackface shearling from Whiteside who sold others
to £160 and £140, others to £120 Edges Green, Old Smithy and
Whitchester (Hall).
