Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 7,123
ewes (comprising 4,033 Cheviots and 3,090 Horned Ewes) at their
Special Sale on Wednesday 2nd October 2002 at their Longtown Mart.
The best show of Cheviots ever exposed at this market attracted
buyers from all over the British Isles, bidding was strong from
the start to finish with all classes being an exceptional trade.
Hill Cheviot ewes sold to £45 from Castlehill, followed
at £44 from Castle Crawford and £41 Elsdonburn, Shearlings
to £58 Loch House and Ewe Lambs to £38 Sourhope.
Cheviot Mule Ewes to £40 Falnash. North Country Cheviot Ewes
sold to £50 from Marwhirn, Terrona, Howside and Parklands,
Shearlings to £78 Marwhirn and £70 Parklands, Ewe Lambs
£46 Gilston followed at £41 from Soutra and Greenside
and £40 Powisholm. Cheviot cross Suffolk Shearlings sold to
£60 from Nether Ernambrie.
Included in the sale were two North Country Cheviot Hill Ewe Dispersals,
the first from Soutra who sold Gimmers to £51, 1 crop to £46,
2 crop to £44, 3 crop to £43 and 4 crop to £43.
The second dispersal was from Howside who sold 1 crops at £46,
2 crop to £50 and 3 crop to £38.
Horned Ewes were also a marvellous show and with buyers from all
parts a dear trade resulted. Swaledale correct ewes to £42
Dumblar Rigg, correct belows to £33 Stonehall, Shearlings
to £95 Dumblar Rigg and Ewe Lambs to £47 Gallowshield
Rigg. Blackface correct ewes to £40 Geltsdale, followed at
£36 Borthwick Brae, Shearlings to £88 Fawcettlees and
Ewe Lambs £40 Penpeugh.
At their Annual Show of North Country Cheviot Rams, there was a
catalogue entry of 80. The ring was packed with buyers and as a
result an extreme demand prevailed. Prior to the sale judging was
ably carried out by Mr Gerald Burroughs from Stow, Galashiels whose
awards were as follows:-
1st and Champion from Messrs Strawhorn, Broomhillbank.
2nd prize Messrs Davies, North Synton.
3rd prize Messrs Strawhorn, Broomhillbank.
Top priced North Country Cheviot Shearling Ram of the day was £480
from Carruthers, closely followed at £400 Gilston. Averages
for Shearlings were as follows:- Carruthers (5) £348; North
Synton (6) £333; Gilston (7) £331; Broomhillbank (8)
£325; Gospel Hall (7) £272; Whiteknowe (2) £240.
Ram Lambs from Gospel Hall (4) averaged £130.
Blackface Rams and Ram Lambs were of nice quality with the best
very easy to sell, Shearlings to £300 Allensgreen who also
sold Ram Lambs at £100.
