Longtown Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their annual prize show and sale of Greyface mule ewe lambs at Longtown on Tuesday 18th September 2018, where an increased catalogue entry of 5,310 were forward.

An excellent show of lambs where shown to perfection by their owners and a great credit must be given. A full ring of local scotch and south buyers were present all day. With trade from start to finish being much sharper than anticipated. Overall average £78.25, which will be £8 back on the year.

Top price of the day was £140 for an outstanding pen of Swaledale cross from Tristain Davidson from Bellmount, Irthington and bought by Mr T.A. Foster, Ryehill, Sebergham, others £128 Morley Hill. Top in ex Blackface was £135 for a fabulous from Messrs A. Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill, Bewcastle, Carlisle. Others to £132 & £130 Peela Hill, £130 & £120 Lawston, £120 Shitlington Hall & Wanwood Partners.

All other ewe lambs which comprised of 1,260 Cheviot Mules and 433 Continentals, which met strong bidding from a full compliment of buyers, with both breeds being dearer on the fortnight. Top was £108 for Texels from Aimshaugh, £104 Hill Brae. Cheviot Mules to £102 Ranbeck & Marwhirn, £100 Linbrig & Ranbeck. Suffolk crosses to £96 Townfoot.

A large entry of 1,696 shearlings sold to great demand, with Cheviot Mules selling to an animated trade, second class shearlings were however harder to shift.

The sale also included several dispersal sales which were well bid for on the days trading with Suffolk ewes ready to go straight to the tup in particular demand.

A small show of 983 ewes were freely bid for although second rate stock only maintaining recent cull values.

A catalogued entry of 150 breeding rams were forward to a large ringside of prospective customers. All quality rams were sold to animated demand, well exceeding vendors expectations, with smaller lesser quality lambs seeing very few bidders. Leading the tup lambs was Matthew Watson, Four O Boot with a quality Texel selling at £750. Tony Gribbon, Waterside again brought some quality tups selling to £600 for a Texel x Beltex Shearling.
