BORDER CHEVIOT & HORNED EWE SALE


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had a catalogue entry of 8,700 at their Annual Sale of Border Cheviot Ewe and Horned Ewes, Shearlings & Ewe Lambs, together with Lleyns at Longtown Mart on Wednesday 28th September 2005.

The 4,395 Cheviot sheep saw buyers present from Wales down to Suffolk and Devon for this annual fixture. The sheep were of the usual high standard and trade was buoyant all day. Overall average for all Cheviot sheep was £40.17. North Country Cheviots sold to £88 for shearlings from Marwhirn, others to £64 Bradley and £62 Woodside. Ewe lambs to £48 Lanefoot. Ewes sold to £56, £55 and £53 Marwhirn, others to £56 and £50 Terreran, £52 Dodgsonstown and £51 Burn (Menzies). Hill Cheviots sold to £56 for shearlings from The Chapel. Ewe lambs to £33 Castle Crawford. Ewes to £46 Gideonscleugh, others to £44 Glengeith, £43 Crowhall andd £40 Castle Crawford. Included in the sale were two reductions, the first from Messrs W. Elliot & Partners, Clenries, Sanquhar and the second from Messrs W. & W. Dunlop & Son, Commonside, Teviothead, Hawick, both flocks were well presented, with trade excellent throughout.

Clenries prices:-
(Clenry Hirsel) – 1 crop to £60; 2 crop £40; 3 crop £38; ewe lambs £37.
(Clawcleaty Hirsel) – 1 crop to £38; 2 crop £37; 3 crop £35; ewe lambs £31.50.

Commonside prices:-
Shearlings to £36; 1 crop £32; 3 crop £35; 4 crop £30; 5 crop £32; ewe lambs £30.50.

The 4,304 horned sheep saw buyers drawn from a very wide area – Wales, Devon and Exmoor, together with locals. An excellent quality show realised prices above vendor’s expectations, an increase of £3 per head on the year. Top price of £74 for Swaledale shearlings from Dumblar Rigg, others £66 Shankfield Head. Ewes sold to £44 Shap Lodge. Blackface shearlings to £70 Dykecrofts, with ewe lambs to £37 Penpeugh. Ewes to £51 Baggarah Yeat, others to £44 Lyndarick, £41 Penpeugh. Also included in the sale were two reductions from Mossholm Farming Co., Clenries, Sanquhar and Mr R. Lauder, Upper Chatto, Hownam, Morebattle. Again both flocks were well presented and sold very well.

Clenries prices:- 1 crop to £39; 2 crop £36.50; 3 crop £33.50.

Upper Chatto prices:- 1 crop to £40; 2 crop £44; 3 crop £40.

Lleyns sold to £56 for shearlings from The Height (Dixon), others to £48 Nether Laggan. Ewes to £48 The Height. Ewe lambs £36.50 Nether Laggan. Lleyn x Beltex shearlings to £52 The Height.

At the Annual Show & Sale of North Country Cheviot Rams, a catalogue entry of 92 head reached a top price of £600 (twice) for two shearlings from Messrs K. & O. Stones, Nuncote Nook, the first sold to Messrs Cockburn, High Ireby, the second to Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall. Messrs Stones sold another shearling at £580 to Dalhanna Farming Co., and overall their pen averaged £460. The sale average for shearlings was £215, with Messrs Graham, Carruthers selling to £380, £360 and £300, J Runciman & Sons, Allanshaws to £320 (twice) and £300, Messrs Davies, North Synton to £300.
