The
Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their annual
sale of Cheviot Mule breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday
26th August 2003, when over 2,500 ewe lambs were forward – a much
increased entry on last year.
Top price was £90 for a pen
of North Country Cheviot Mules from H. Cockburn & Co., Kingside,
Leadburn, purchased by Messrs D.D. McDowall, Newtown. This was
followed at £89, paid by
Mr Turner, Martin Nest Huddersfield to Messrs Halliday, Crawthat,
Lockerbie who sold others at £74 to Mr Longstaff, Dun House,
Bishop Auckland. £74 was also paid by Mr Brown, Hilton of
Culsh, Aberdeenshire for the top pen from Messrs Crozier, Embley.
An excellent show of Hill Cheviot mules was topped at £70
from Cowburn Farms to J.T. Fleming & Son, Falnash and also
from Messrs Common, Crossdykes to Mr P. Murray, Branxholmbraes.
The overall average was £56.60, a rise of £4 on the
year.

Corriehills £62; Embley £74, £60; Cowburn £70, £61, £60;
Carterton £69, £64 (twice); Mid Murthat £62;

Cheviot mule
shearlings were short of requirements selling to £84
from Messrs Common, Crossdykes, closely followed at £70 Marwhirn.
