Longtown Primestock Sale Report
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 25 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 21 OTM cattle, 6,672 prime hoggs and 3,600 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th March 2015.
A larger show of cattle was presented to a good ringside of buyers, trade for OTM cattle extremely good. Clean cattle were slightly cheaper on the week but very much in line with the national trend.

There were 6,672 prime hoggs forward, averaging 203p per kilo (SQQ 207p). Prices surpassed all other centres this week, demand was particularly strong for 50kg+ hoggs and export weight hoggs to a top of 288.9p per kilo for Beltex from Powhead and £125 for Texel from Roachburn.
Also included in the sale was the annual prize show and sale of Cheviot prime hoggs, a tremendous show of 21 pens of Hill Cheviots and 18 pens of North Country Cheviots were forward with all show sheep turned out to perfection and a credit to the vendors. The show was kindly sponsored by PJ Tractor Parts, Longtown and ably judged by Mr. James Thompson. After much deliberation he awarded the champion pen of Hill Cheviots to regular consigner W & J Glendinning, Crawsknowe which realised 47kg £97 to the judge, with the reserve from the same home. Champion North Country Cheviot was awarded to Messrs Eastham, Longburghfauld which scaled at 51kg £100 to Bowood Yorkshire Lamb.
