Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts had forward a huge entry of 11,525 sheep comprising of 7,744 lambs and 3,881 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 18th December 2025.

PRIME LAMBS

The Largest entry of 7,744 prime lambs in the country congregated at Longtown, selling to a full ringside of purchasers, ensuring all grades of well finished lambs were keenly sought after easily surpassing last weeks high rates of return.

Longtowns reputation as the most consistent platform to market large numbers of prime lambs again held firm, being way in front of other centres this week. Keep the lambs moving when they are ready and we’ll look after everything else for premium returns.
 
Many more fed, lean meated lambs are required for the next 2 weeks which will be in demand and sold to advantage, with big numbers easily handled. (Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers on when best to market your lambs.)

Plenty runs of heavy lambs still achieving averages north of £170 proving to be short of purchaser requirements and commercial export weights regularly trading 335-355ppk.  

Top price per head of £208 for Texels from Guards Mill and Suffolks from Kilnford Croft with a top per kilo of 441p for Beltex from Easter Balgillo

CAST EWES AND RAMS

Another similar show of 3,881 cast ewes and rams were forward with all classes dearer again across the board.  Plain ewes in serious demand again with heavy ewes showing large improvements. All classes are sold to vendor advantage. Numbers wanted of all conditions and breeds for next weeks Saturday sale.  

Heavy ewes topped at £345 for Texel ewes from M & E MacTaggart, Rascarrel, Castle Douglas.

Beltex ewes sold to £340 shown by B Findlay, Easter Balgillo, Forfar.

Suffolks peaked at £305 from R & S Nixon & Co., Oakwood, Selkirk.

Light ewes topped at £160 for Cheviot ewes from M E Scott, Yethouse Fields, Newcastleton.

Rams sold to £300 for Texels from VA & DE Gibson, Gibbs Hill, Bardon Mill.
