Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 8,117 sheep comprising of 5,122 prime lambs and 3,095 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 28th November 2024.

A larger entry of cows and bulls, with more quality on offer for a mainly native bred show. A busy ringside of buyers were keen to purchase with the sale topping at £1,940 for a Charolais from JW Vevers, High Stenries, Waterbeck with Angus selling at £1,672 from EAP Glendinning, Over Cassock, Eskdalemuir. Highlanders peaked the top per kilo at 216p from Ormsary Farmers, Lochgilphead, Argyll.

A larger show of 5,122 prime lambs forward to a busy ring of purchasers ensuring trade was slightly firmer than last week’s high rates of return. Best export lambs in short supply and can be sold to premium rates. Keep them coming as numbers are keenly sought after on a weekly basis to satisfy demand and can be sold with ease.  

The sale topped at 448p for Beltex lambs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck, who also sold the top price per head of £218, with this run of 56 Beltex lambs going on to average 438p and £214.73, being a long way in front of other outlets

PLEASE NOTE:- Saturday 7th December 2024, Longtown hosts their Christmas Show and Sale of 100 prime cattle, prime bulls and prime cows, also 2,500 prime lambs. There is a total prize fund of £3,000 up for grabs!

Also, this day a part dispersal of the renowned herd of Hereford cows with calves at foot consigned by Leslie and Nacy Brown, Westholm Farm, Winston, Darlington.

A similar show of 3,095 ewes and rams were forward to unrivalled rates. No need to “stop the press”, Longtown is the auction that just keeps on giving, putting farmers first leaving competitors “crying into their cornflakes.” Longtown is no one trick pony with valued purchasers travelling from all over the country coming to take advantage of the numbers that are on show week in week out. 19 active purchasers operating on 59 accounts makes Longtown the most competitive and consistent cast ewe ring in the country. Heavy commercial ewes were in short supply and proved very easy to sell. Light ewes full of meat were also in serious demand. The trade for best Texel and Beltex ewes can only described as biblical.

The sale topped at £500 for a tremendous Texel ewe from M/s GT Banks, High Hill Head, North Yorks. 

Beltex peaked at £270 from M/s S & M Pickworth, Dotland Park, Hexham.  

Suffolk ewes sold to £255 from M/s J & V Crozier, Faugh Beeches, Heads Nook.

Mule ewes sold to £190 from M/s L & N Shuttleworth, Drumburn, Dumfries.

Hill ewes topped at £142 for Cheviots consigned from HM Livestock, Shethin, Ellon.

Blackfaces ewes soared to £139 from Tillybardine Farms, Lethnot, Brechin, with their run of 206 Blackfaces averaging a phenomenal £135.49.  

Rams to £240 for Bluefaced Leicester from J Runciman & Sons, Allanshaws, Stow.
